Oil was discovered in the Illinois Basin in 1938. To assure a constant, high quality product supply, in 1940, the cooperative system built a small refinery near the Ohio River in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. In 1953, a 238 mile pipeline was completed from Mt. Vernon to Peru, Indiana. This pipeline was an essential step in the development of the strict quality control measures demanded for co-op petroleum products, as the use of the privately owned pipeline guarantees the purity of the final product. Terminals are located along the pipeline at Mt. Vernon, Switz City, Jolietville, and Peru. By utilizing the finest American low-sulfur, Illinois-basin crude oil refined under strict quality control processes and transported to terminals via a stringently controlled distribution system, customers are assured of receiving the highest quality products available. The refinery continues to make the necessary changes to meet the ever-changing standards imposed on this industry, while always striving to maintain the products and quality that have been the trademarks of the cooperative system.
